HERE IN SPIRIT
"Yes,yes! Coming! What?!?" The elderly man opened the door.
"Dr. Jackson?"
"Haven't been called that in years." He nodded pushing his glasses up.
"I'm Lindsey Cole,I've read everything you've written. I'm a huge fan."She gushed.
"So what can I do for you?"
"I've read all your books about your missions and would like to know more."
"Might as well come in." He shuffled away from the door.
She stepped inside and closed the door.
It was to her surprise she located the man in a small home in San Diego. He'd made millions
on his books about the Stargate project,he could have had a mansion, she wondered where all the money was?
The lights flickered making her shake her head at the apparently faulty wiring.
"Help yourself to cream, sugar or milk." He returned with two mugs handing her one.
"This is fine."
"Take a seat." He said easing onto the couch.
She took a seat opposite and watched him sip his coffee.
The lights flickered again.
"It's only my second." He muttered.
"Um...so..."
"The last mission off-world I never wrote about."
She placed the mug on the table.
"It was forty years ago. I lost my friends that day." He sighed.
"If this is too painful..."
"I want someone to know. Maybe you'll write about it."
"Me?"
" 'The Biography of SG-1: The Faces Behind The Gate' "
"Oh." She blushed embarrassed.
"I may be old but my mind still works." He eyed her.
"Okay. Can I tape this?"
"Aren't you already?"
Subconsciously she touched her miniature gate pin.
Daniel sighed and looked toward the blank t.v.
"We were in a battle against the Priors, followers of the Ori..."
"I know who they are." She nodded.
"SG-1,me,Sam,Cam,Teal'c...and Jack."
The near-by lamp flickered then went off.
Daniel glanced at it and smiled.
"We'd gone to a planet to meet with the people again..."
So these folks are the...?
Tenrol,Jack.
Right, they want to talk alliance against the Ori.
That's why they contacted us,sir,Sam replied.
Keep your eyes open kids,Jack ordered as they approached the village.
"The elders came to greet us,insisted we eat and drink as it was evening meal.
I remember feeling extremely tired and they led us to huts to rest.
Jack's warning bells were probably in overdrive...I wish mine had been.
I woke up with a headache, opening my eyes I realized I was in a damp cell.
Getting to my feet I went to the door and listened."
JACK?
DANNY?
YEAH!
"I could hear Cam,Sam and Teal'c also."
IT'S ALWAYS THE QUIET ONES!
WHAT?
"I had no idea what Jack meant."
THE NEIGHBORS THAT GO BALLISTIC,JACKSON,Mitchell replied.
Oh.
CRAP!
JACK?
GOT COMPANY!
SIR?
"Sam kept calling him but there was no answer."
Daniel took a sip of coffee before continuing.
"I don't know how much time had passed..."
PRIOR!
"Cameron shouted then there was silence again."
Daniel looked inwardly a moment before speaking again.
"I called out to them,Sam and Teal'c answered. Eventually there was only silence then my cell door opened
and there stood the Prior from Veria. I had no choice but to follow.
He took me to a large room and started espousing on the virtue of the Ori."
The Ori are not gods! Yes they have powers but that doesn't make them--
"I felt myself flying through the air,my head impacted the stone wall and I started to lose consciousness."
And those that turn away from light to darkness shall be destroyed.
"My arm felt like it was on fire then I was falling. I was delivered back to my cell then promptly passed out."
He sighed deeply before continuing.
"When I came to I hurt everywhere, especially my left arm."
She saw him touch it and shiver slightly.
"My left arm, from shoulder to hand was blistered."
He unbuttoned his cuff and showed her the white scars then rebuttoned it.
"Over and over they took me in there..."
It's been four days...I think...time is hard to remember here.
Oh God,please not again.
Cameron?!?
"He was no more than ten feet from me but I was helpless to go to him."
Tell us how to reach the evil ones.
"Cameron shook his head no and I remained silent.
The Prior's staff glowed and I saw Cameron's eyes grow wide,he started gasping for breath, his face grew pale."
STOP IT!
Tell us.
I DON'T KNOW! LET HIM GO!
"Cameron's eyes rolled up into his head...I watched horrified...then I heard the snap and he dropped to the ground dead."
Daniel whispered and shuffled into the kitchen.
Lindsey sat there stunned, not even noticing the flickering lights that followed him.
"I'm alright. It's just hard to remember, but I need to..." Daniel whispered then shivered. "It needs to be told."
Several deep breaths later he returned to the young woman.
"That was just the beginning..."
The cell door opened again.
This is just a horrible nightmare,I told myself as I was taken back to the room.
SAM?!?
Tell us how to reach the evil ones.
I don't know! I swear I don't know!
Daniel,help me!
Sam cried out as fire circled her feet.
Grunting,Daniel tried to move but couldn't.
STOP IT! I DON'T KNOW!!!
The Prior turned and left as Sam burned to death.
"Oh...God..." Lindsey swallowed convulsively.
"Teal'c was next."
Tell us how to reach the evil ones.
I can't tell you what I don't know.
Shal'kek nem'ron!
I die free,I whispered.
The Prior raised his staff and flung Teal'c across the room into the opposite wall,I watched my friend slide down the wall,
a trail of blood in his wake, his eyes were lifeless.
"They took me back to my cell. All that was left was Jack then it would be over.
I fervently hoped it would be over fast for him...and me.
His death would be the hardest. I loved Sam and Teal'c...Cameron was my friend...but Jack...
he was family." Daniel said softly then took a moment to compose himself.
"As they took me out again I felt numb. Jack was already there,he had seen the remains of the other
and knew I'd been forced to witness their deaths."
Tell us how to reach the evil ones.
Tryin' for ascension are ya? You ain't got a snowballs chance--
I gritted my teeth as Jack was lifted into the air.
Tell us how to reach the evil ones.
I stared at the ground silently.
That's my boy!
The Prior slammed him into the ceiling thirty feet up and held him there.
I will never betray the ascended to the murderous Ori!
The Prior turned and left, seconds later Jack fell to the floor.
I went to him,not frozen by the Prior now.
Jack...
Ow.
I'm sorry,I started to cry.
Danny, don't ever tell them. Promise me.
I nodded, the words stuck in my throat.
There was a bright light and we found ourselves on a ship.
Dr. Jackson!
Help...help,Jack.
"The Prometheus had found us,Sam,Teal'c and Cameron were placed into stasis.
Jack was taken away and I was led to bed and sedated."
"They saved the two of you."
"Jack...Jack died less that an hour later."
"But...I..."
"You know the story, all my books were dedicated to them for people to know who they were.
Please go now." Daniel rose and shuffled into the bedroom and closed the door.
Lindsey sat there undecided, she wanted the whole story, how did he survive losing his family like that?
She gasped when the t.v. came to life, the radio blared on,the lights flickered rapidly but what got her
to leave was the sudden coldness on her shoulder and the voice in her ear that told her to 'Go'.
The lights went off, then the radio and finally the t.v.
The house became silent once again and Daniel sighed.
The light next to his bed came on by itself.
"Is she gone?"
"Yeah. You okay?"
Daniel sat up and looked at his nearly tranparent friend.
"I'm tired Jack."
"Go to sleep. I'll keep watch."
Daniel nodded and eased back down.
"Thanks for staying with me all these years."
"No one gets left behind."
Daniel nodded and closed his eyes.
"Jack."
Jack looked up to see Daniel,a very young Daniel, hovering beside his uncharacteristically still older self on the bed.
"Let's go home Jack."
Jack smiled and followed him into the light.
"Dad!"
"Charlie?" He gaped at the man.
"Everyone is thirty here sir." Sam smiled
"Indeed." Teal'c nodded to his own son.
"Dan'yel."
"Sha're." He breathed and held his wife again.
"The band's back together." Cameron grinned.
Jack looked at his kids and smiled.
"Dr. Daniel Jackson, the man credited with opening the Stargate that allowed intergalactic travel to other planets
was discovered dead in his home this morning by a close family friend.
Daniel Jackson authored sixty books on his missions through the Stargate. He was eighty-three."
Lindsey Cole turned off the television and back to her computer.
"Make that sixty-one."
As told to Lindsey Cole by Dr. Daniel Jackson...
